A journeyman exam is not a test of whether you can wire a house. You already know how to work. It's a test of how fast you can find the right answer in the NEC while the clock runs. Almost every licensing exam in the country works the same way:
- Open book. You bring your own copy of the NEC (NFPA 70) — the edition your jurisdiction has adopted. This guide is built around the 2026 edition.
- Multiple choice, timed. Most exams run roughly 70–90 questions over about four hours — that's about 3 minutes per question. Your testing body sets the exact count, passing score (70% is common), and rules on tabs and highlighting. Read your candidate information bulletin and follow it exactly.
- Heavy on calculations and Article 250. Load calculations, conduit and box fill, motor circuits, and grounding/bonding consistently make up a large share of journeyman exams.
How to use this guide: Work the chapters in order with your code book open. Every time a section number is cited, flip to it in your book and put a tab there — by the end, your book is tabbed for the exam (Chapter 13 shows you the system). Do the worked examples with a pencil before reading the answers. Finish with the 40-question practice exam in Chapter 12, timed.
Every NEC cycle brings hundreds of changes — new articles, reorganized limited-energy rules, renumbered tables. Where a rule has been stable for many cycles, this guide cites the long-standing article number so you can learn it cold. Where the 2026 edition may have moved or renumbered material, the guide tells you to verify against your printed 2026 code book rather than guessing. Never memorize a section number from a study guide without confirming it in your own book.
One more thing, said plainly: no study guide can guarantee you'll pass — anyone who promises that is selling you something. What this guide does is focus your study on the material exams actually draw from, with the math worked out step by step. The rest is reps.
Journeyman licensing is handled locally in much of the country — states, counties, and cities all do it differently, and some (including Pennsylvania) license at the city level rather than statewide. Confirm which NEC edition your exam uses and what you're allowed to bring before you study the wrong book.

Most stores don't carry the good stuff — or they sell it without anyone to install it right. I source new-age electrical products (smart switches, dimmers, LED retrofits) and install them to code. One call, one flat price, working before I leave. Have a specific device in mind? Ask — if it's legit and listed, I'll get it.

Innovative gear from established overseas makers (Aqara, Govee, SwitchBot, Lumary, Treatlife, Sonoff) — I stick to UL- or ETL-listed devices, installed to code. Ordered new-in-box for your job.
